Each approved vehicle type shall be identified by a type identification number (type ID) in accordance with the Commission Implementing Decision of 4 October 2011 on the European register of authorised types of railway vehicles (2011/665/EU). It is a numeric code consisting of ten digits, plus a variant and a version code:

To obtain a type ID, a request for a draft type in ERATV must be submitted to the authorising authority (NSA or Agency). The application shall be submitted before the application for a vehicle type authorisation is handed in. If the authorising entity is a national safety authority (NSA), the application shall be submitted on a form which shall be sent in writing by post or handed in person (to: Public Agency of the Republic of Slovenia for Railway Transport–Javna agencija za železniški promet Republike Slovenije, Kopitarjeva ulica 5, Maribor) or send by e-mail to gp.azp@azp.si.

The application must also be accompanied by a completed technical data sheet for the vehicle type.

After creating a draft type in ERATV, the applicant is given the possibility to access* (the draft type), where they can directly enter the technical details, which are then validated by the safety authority after the type authorisation has been issued.
